Ohrid, the Jerusalem of the Balkans
Ohrid, Northern Macedonia
Welcome to Ohrid
The so-called “Jerusalem of the Balkans” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the number of Byzantine Churches located in it.
About this tour
Ohrid is certainly the most suggestive location in the whole state of Northern Macedonia and one of the most beautiful in the Balkans. The city stands on the eastern shore of the lake of the same name which is one third Albanian and two thirds Macedonian. It is one of the oldest lakes in Europe and certainly one of the clearest: despite being surrounded by villages, the water is as transparent as fine glass.
In summer it is very crowded and you probably won’t enjoy the atmosphere but if you have the opportunity to visit Ohrid in the low season you will understand why UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site (one of the few cases where it is both natural and cultural heritage) . In addition to the clear waters, Ohrid is famous for the number of Byzantine churches: originally there were 365, one for each day of the year. For this reason it was known as the Jerusalem of the Balkans.
